When A Hymn Becomes A Prayer

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
by Robert Robinson and Martin Madan
1 - Come, thou Fount of every blessing;
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
mount of God’s unchanging love!
2 - Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I’m come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
3 Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, oh take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

You know those songs you have memorized? The words come automatically. But then again, what is the song really saying?
The hymns are a treasure of faith through the generations of God’s faithfulness to us. The problem is that the longer they are around, the more distant the vocabulary and phrasing become. I find myself singing and suddenly realizing that I don’t really know what the songwriter is saying.
Enter the beautiful song, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Revisiting these lyrics, I have a deeper understanding that the Lord holds us close to His heart.
Pray with me through this paraphrase.
1 - Jesus, You alone are the source of life and blessing. Come prepare my heart to sing of Your grace and Your never-ending mercy. You deserve our heartfelt praise.Teach me beautiful, heavenly songs. Thank You that I am anchored in Your eternal, unchanging love!
2 - I remember how You have been my help and strength. With Your goodness and safety, I will continue on to heaven. Jesus, even when I didn’t know You, You searched for me when I roamed far away. By Your death on the cross, You rescued me by Your precious blood.
3 - Every day, I am compelled that Your grace is beyond what I could ever pay. Tightly hold my wandering heart close to You with Your goodness. Don’t let me drift as I am prone to do. Though I love You, I know that I tend to stray from You. I give You my heart. Take it and seal it. Stamp Your name on my heart for Your glory.
That last stanza always hits me. I really do love Jesus, but it seems my sin continually trips me. He is so faithful to us despite our weaknesses. Praise God that He chases after us and continually invites us in!
Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.
Psalm 86:11 NKJV
