Out of the Fog
Do you ever feel that your
time with Jesus falls flat?
2/1/2026
I want more of Jesus.
Sometimes, things just don’t connect. I show up and sit with my Bible and journal. I read the Scripture passage. I read it again. And again. My brain just won’t compute the words on the page. Prayers seem to hit the ceiling. The space feels lifeless.
I’m “doing” all the right things, but an invisible wall seems to keep me distant from encountering God. My heart longs to meet Him and experience the Presence of the Living God. Yet, in those times, I can’t seem to break through.
What do you do when nothing seems to click? You’ve made the effort. You know God is good.
There can be several reasons that create this invisible wall.
Distractability
Brain Fog
Lethargy
Over-familiarity
Lack of zeal
Maybe it’s just the day. However, if this experience recurs, look at these potential root causes. First, look inward; how is your mind and your heart? Is something happening in your life that is causing stress and distractions? Is there a relationship that worries you? Does a looming challenge cause fear?
Second, evaluate your health. Are you getting adequate sleep, healthy food, exercise, hydration? Is there something going on with hormones? Surprisingly, these physical factors can really affect those quiet efforts to sit before Jesus.
In addition, Laura Frost, LCSW, recommends rating your motivation and confidence on a scale from 1 (none) to 10 (the most). Ask follow up questions such as, what might grow my motivation? What is one small thing I can do to feel more confident about this? Prayerfully, think about what factors contribute and what action you could take forward.
As you take steps to address these underlying causes, give yourself grace. Try a short walk and talk to Jesus. Listen to energetic worship music or ambient worship instrumentals. Put on headphones with the Bible through an ambient video on YouTube or audio through an app. Pray for hunger and desire to be rekindled.
There will be a better day. Keep going. Don’t quit.
Stay engaged. Even on days or in seasons when it feels pointless, be confident that you are investing in your spiritual journey and that God compounds the effort that you bring to produce great dividends for His Kingdom. Nothing is wasted with Jesus.
